Last minute Christmas Baking – for Rabbits

There seems to be bright lights and sparkly things everywhere, anyone would think it was almost Christmas or something! If it’s snuck up on you and the idea of braving the shops for last minute presents sends you into a panic, this is for you…

Christmas Bunny Treats!

They are easy and inexpensive to make, healthier than most shop bought treats and make wonderfully tasty Christmas presents for your rabbit.

Just take these instructions for making homemade rabbit treats and adjust the flavour to your rabbits taste. This time Scamp tried out Carrot & Banana…

Take two handfuls of pellets (crushed), two handfuls of rolled oats, 1 banana, 2 medium carrots

Finely grate the carrot, chop up the banana, crush the pellets and mix it all together.

Roll out the mix with a rolling pin and then use your favourite cookie cutters, we had squares, stars and Christmas Trees. Then poke a hole in them – don’t forget this step if you want to hang them up!

Bake on a low heat for a couple of hours until they are completely dry. And tada, Christmas bunny treats:

Please remember to remove the ribbon, or swap it for something more bunny safe like sisal before letting your bun lose on them!

A Time for Giving

Our bunnies are a luckily lot, I’m sure they are treated and cuddled all year around. Sadly, there are many bunnies that don’t have a slave to spoil them this Christmas, so if you have spare treats, have time to make some bunny toys, or have odds and ends like bottles, bowls, bin bags, brushes, towels, unwanted toys, even a bag of spare bunny food then please pop them along to your local rescue and make their day with something for the not so luckily bunnies. There is a surprise parcel already winging its way to a rescue from me and my family.

Have a merry Christmas everyone!

I’m going to try this out this weekend for my buns, I reckon they’ll love them, thanks!

These look yummy. You have inspired us to have a go, we didn’t have bananas but added a little grated apple…just waiting for them to dry out. Fingers crossed Frodo will like them 🙂 x

    • Tamsin says:

I hope they went well, what did Frodo think?

      • Debbie says:

Hi Tamsin, Frodo seems to love them (though they do look like mini dried up cow pats) they are good for his teeth too 🙂 . We are going to have a go at your banana recipe next. These really are a great idea, we always tried to get natural treats and his favourite ones have stopped being produced so it kills two birds with one stone, cheap and easy to make and you know exactly what is going in them! Thanks again for the inspiration x

        • Tamsin says:

Lol, I have to say my first batch did somewhat resemble cow pats too. Scamp didn’t mind either though. I’m glad Frodo is enjoying them!

  3. Lisa says:

Wow. My bunnies would nom up those ingredients in a heartbeat without even cooking them up! I’ll bet the finished product is delicious!

  4. Manuela says:

Is it okay if I replace the carrot with celery? It’s that my rabbit LOVES celery and doesn’t really like carrots… If I can’t replace the carrot with celery then with what can I replace the carrot with? Thanks a lot!

    • Tamsin says:

I don’t know how well celery grates but you could give it ago. You could try any sort of vegetable or even something like apple – if you bunny likes that. In my other mix I just used banana and fenugreek (a herb) and no carrot, but you could use parsley or another herb you bunny likes instead.

Wowzer! Those treats look like a buns paradise! I should try making them for Gus sometime!

  6. IDK says:

made those! I ate a third of the carrot/ banana mix myself than added oats and pellets . meant to dehydrate rather than bake but it was late so ended up cranking the oven up after 30 min in 😉 the rabbits LOVE them. will be making more tonight !

    • Tamsin says:

Lol, is carrot & banana a tasty combination then?

I baked more too, I can’t believe how crazy Scamp goes for them. He likes all the individual ingredients but absolutely loves the combination. I’m glad your bun feels the same way 🙂

  7. IDK says:

it totally is! they are the main ingredients of a sweet carrot salad i grew up with (grated carrots, small pieces of banana, some orange juice and some walnuts plus raisins if you like) I felt guilty but I had the midnight munchies so I stole from the rabbits….

will be experimenting some more based on this (replace oats with hay / dried meadow flowers etc. ) they rip them out of my fingers (made the 2nd batch in strips / sticks) than run off with their pieces 🙂

I also wanted to say that your blog has been a BRILLIANT source of information (we only just got our rabbits). I came across it after we had decided to build a shed for them and I have found so much useful information on so many different topics ! thanks very much !

I can’t wait for spring/summer when there are more plants available to experiment with. I was thinking things like finely chopped dandelion etc. might make a good flavour.

Thank you for such good instructions and photos. My nine year old daughter made these for her mini lop. Her bunny loves them. I had them in a jar on the counter and my husband almost ate one 🙂

  9. Taliah says:

I shall make these tomorrow, I have all the ingredients in the house and my little Bertie and Frisco will love them! Thank you for sharing x

  10. Kelly Batterbury says:

HI, I want to make these for my rabbits but Im having trouble finding Rolled Oats. Can I use something else instead???

    • Tamsin says:

You should be able to find them in the supermarket – they are used to make porridge 🙂 They might be called ‘porridge oats’ instead You might also be able to get them via a horse feed store.

If you still have no luck, I imagine you could skip them and just add more pellets instead.
