Rabbit Toys: Nut Knot Nibbler

January 11th, 2010

Super Pet claim the Nut Knot Nibbler is:

a great big ball of fun…  Pets will nibble and gnaw this wooden chew toy to reach an all natural surprise inside – a real walnut! … a perfect chew toy for rabbits

I thought this was going to be a hit. It got quite a bit of initial interest and a few nibbles but it soon became another of those chew toys that get totally ignored. A walnut might be a great motivator for a pet rat but I’m not sure natural, walnut, and rabbit are really words that go together?

I think the problem with wooden chews is by the time the woods been dried, shaped, coloured blue, and wrapped in plastic it’s so far from an actual tree it’s lost all its tastiness. The bark also seems to be a rabbit’s favourite part and most toys don’t have any.

A nice fresh apple branch gets much more interest. This ones had all its bark stripped:

If you don’t have your own apple tree then ask around and see if you can find a friend/neighbour with one or ask on freeads/freecycle. Just make sure they don’t spray with pesticides.

New for 2010

January 2nd, 2010

I thought the best way to start the new year was to have a new look. So I’ve spent the last couple of days working on a new header and breaking the code in my website/blog. The end result is (hopefully) the two are a bit more linked together and a bit prettier to look at. I chucked out the old grey background (what was I thinking?) and added a nice chocolate colour. Infinitely more edible don’t you think… no nibbling please!

That just leaves the actual content to tidy up and the odds and ends that are still broken to fix.

This is a bit of a boring post so have a cute bunny tummy picture to go with it…

Happy New Year, I hope it’s a good un!

Best Thing About Christmas (if you’re a rabbit)

December 26th, 2009

The rabbit’s favourite thing about Christmas has to be the big pile of veg. Although even Scamp isn’t that keen on brussel sprouts!

Rabbit Vegetables

That’s carrot, sprouts and parsnip, then there is broccoli today to add to that. The parsnips are home-grown, my first try at parsnips, so we saved them for Christmas. It dig take a bit of work to get them out of the frozen ground but they tasted great. Here’s a piccy, yummm….

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope your having a good time 🙂

Scamp in the Snow

December 21st, 2009

Snow is a great enrichment opportunity for rabbits to dig and forage; but, my garden is not Scamp proof. So, if the bunny can’t go to the snow, the snow has to come to the bunny. Cue one washing up bowl full of snow, laced with rabbit food…

Scamp’s New Box

December 20th, 2009

Rabbits, even those safe indoors, need a place to hide in case something scary happens. Scamp’s is an A4 paper box. My dad brings him new ones regularly from work, as he likes to customise them until there’s no walls left to hold the lid up.

After much faffing about I managed to get a video uploaded of him adding a door to his latest box. It’s sped up because 5 minutes of chewing can get a little monotonous when you can just see a nose, cute though it is.

It’s just the right size for curling up for a nap too:
